Emergency Maintenance (757) 287-5873

Vacation Time Again It is vacation time again.  If you are one of the millions planning on getting away from it all, before you leave don’t forget to:

·         Leave a light on, or invest in timers.  This leaves the impression that someone is home.

·         Notify the office that you will be away.  Let them know who is allowed in your apartment while you are away.

·         Notify the post office and newspaper service if you plan to be gone for more than a few days.  They can hold delivery until you return.

·         Let family or friends know your planned travel route.

·         If possible take a cellular phone.  Stock your car with bottled water, a spare tire, jack and supplies.  Keep a flashlight on hand.

·         Take snacks and drinks with you for the drive, it costs less than buying your meals on the road.

·         If you have children, keep them occupied!   Travel games are an excellent idea, as are books on tape.

If you will be flying, be sure your entire luggage is tagged.  Wear comfortable clothes and shoes.

Hurricane Preparedness –  Hurricane   season started June 1st and officially does not end until October 31st.  Below is useful information you may need if a hurricane hits the Hampton Roads area.

If there is an indication a hurricane will hit the local municipalities, you should be prepared. Different parts of the local municipalities can be impacted by the storm based upon winds, tidal conditions, rainfall and tornado activity. For these reasons, it is important to understand the conditions that threaten our area, and the actions you should consider in preparing for such an emergency.

Before the storm strikes is the time to plan for the consequences. Below is some information to help you prepare for a hurricane.

- Fill bathtub, sinks, or containers with water.

- Have flashlights, batteries, battery - operated radio on hand.

- Put important papers in plastic bags or container and seal them well.

- If you are on medication, check to ensure you will have enough on hand to weather the storm and the aftermath.

- If the storm hits, stay away from the windows.

- Have can food items on hand. Be sure to have a manual can opener.

- If the power goes out, turn off your air conditioner and keep your refrigerator and

freezer doors closed. Keeping them closed may help you save your food. You may also

want to buy a few bags of charcoal because if there is no power your stove will not work and you may want to cook a hot meal.

- Lastly and most importantly, have a full tank of gas in your car in case you must leave the area.

Local shelter information will be given out over the TV and Radio. The closest shelters to Waterford Apartments are Bayside High School on Haygood Road and Independence Middle School on Paul Wakefield Drive.

If you have to go or would feel more comfortable in a shelter-take pillows, blankets, cots, sleeping bags, folding chairs, changes of clothes, bath items (such as soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, towels, etc.), potable water, flashlights, batteries, radio, medication, important papers, and dry food items. If mandatory evacuation is called for in the Virginia Beach area, you must follow the evacuation routes. From Waterford Apartments take a left onto Shore Drive, then a left at the light onto diamond Springs Road, follow Diamond Springs Road to Northampton Blvd. (bear right) follow signs to 1-64. You can take either 1-64 to Norfolk/Hampton(this will take you towards Williamsburg/Richmond area) or 1-64 to Chesapeake/Suffolk(this will take you to the end of 1-64, at the end take route 13/58/460 towards Suffolk, route 58 or 460 West will take you towards Roanoke).

Maintenance Corner

Preventive Maintenance - Air filters will be changed during the month of August.  Please remove items blocking the access panel or the access door in the bedroom.  In a two bedroom apartment the access panel is located in the small bedroom closet.   A Managers Inspection will also be conducted on the same day.

A NOTICE WILL BE PUT ON YOUR FRONT DOOR 48 HOURS PRIOR TO PERFORMING PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE.

It is recommended that all Residents have a toilet plunger.  If you do not have one, you may borrow one from the Rental Office until 8 pm 7 days per week.
